Bad Ideas Weekend

Bad Ideas Weekend Ever wanted to sculpt a masterpiece out of butter?  Make a city out of meat?  Toss a watermelon back and forth in some sort of deranged water balloon fight? This weekend was Bad Ideas Weekend.  MIT students from across campus joined together to work on the worst possible ideas they could come up with. To celebrate the start of the weekend, a strange object was placed on the facade of lobby 7. Im not really sure what it is, but it definitely says Bad Ideas on it and it advertises Bad Ideas, so I approve. East Campus has been buzzing and punting for the past few weeks in preparation for this weekends events.  You can see the effects of the madness all over the courtyard and even in the basement. I quickly found that being a vegetarian during Bad Ideas Weekend is a bad idea.  Many of the events involved eating meat, like the Wing Eating kick-off event (See Kate R. 14s post), Taco Bell Eating competition, Exotic Meat event, and How Many Feet Can You Eat Subway eating event.  But I still found things to do, like observe the meat eaters preparing for their challenges and attend my first event of Bad Ideas, the Craigslist Scavenger Hunt. My friend Ali F. 16 rented a zip car Friday night and six of us ventured off to find as many insane things as we could for free off of Craigslist in the Boston-Cambridge area.  We found a toilet and a ceiling fan, and quite an interesting decoration for hall.  We got lost in a snowy Boston and almost ended up at the airport, but we found our way back home eventually.  After two hours, the participants gathered all the things we had found from all over Boston in one giant reuse pile, and we admired our treasures.  There were chairs, televisions, cushions, books, and clothing.  I went through the pile and found a new friend. I named him Charles.  After a wonderful night, Ali and I made cookies for hall and I proceeded to study for my physics final Monday. But then it was Saturday. And there was even more awesome. Once again, my hall was obsessing over meat.  Last time, they were going crazy for bacon as certain people attempted to make soap out of bacon fat, but Saturday it was because Frobert M. 15 and Taylor A. 13  were making a mini version of MIT campus out of meat. Yup, the East Campus Talbot Kitchen had over $400 of meat in it.  And their team worked away at making the best piece of meat art possible. (Alyssa W. 16 helped in the kitchen with cooking pork) And there was so much meat :( :( Even the mashed potatoes had bacon in them :( But some my sadness quickly washed away as I stepped outside to find butter.  108 pounds of butter. BUTTER SCULPTING!!! How could this be a bad idea? It seems like a dream you never knew you had, a wonderfully fun event for all. Except that I quickly learned that I am not a butter sculpter.  It looked so easy in the lounge, where everyone was so carefully carving blocks and faces and buildings out of butter. I tried to make a squanch, which is my halls mascot, but as you can see, it ended terribly. Still, I had fun.  This weekend was quite great, and it wasnt even near over yet!  Saturday night was the infamous Green Building Challenge, where students were challenged to run up the 19-story Green Building as many times as they could.  I couldnt participate in running this year because I broke my foot a couple months ago from running (stress fractures are mean!!) and I am still in the healing phase, but it was so exciting to see the challenge in action!  Also, I got to hand out inspirational flyers and bananas at the top of the building!! This has been a wonderful weekend, a necessary break for me during this very hosed physics-and-calculus-filled IAP.  It is a weekend before two finals and full of a lot of stress and chaos, but IAP is almost over and I cant wait for a new awesome semester. For this paper we are going to briefly elaborate Technical, Fundamental and Empirical Analyses. Each of these Analyses has its own weight toward the prediction of the future value. Technical Analysts strongly believe that past performance of an asset in markets are good indications of future performance. Fundamental Analysts do evaluation of a security by examining related economic, financial and different qualitative and quantitative factors. Empirical Analyses, in our case Capital Asset Pricing Model and Fama and French Model, are models which are developed to predict the future value of a security by taking into account the risk and premium. W.LO et al (2000) define technical analysis, which are also known as charting as a practice that has been used for many decades; however, the discipline itself has not been given the same level of academic examination and acceptance as fundamental analysis did. Furthermore, numerous academic researchers recommend that even though its terminology and methods used, technical anal ysis may be a very good tool for giving useful information from market prices. Westerhoff, F. (2006) argues that volume gives an important confirmation of price action; increasing volume points out a strong trend, whereas decreasing in volume points out a weakening trend. Fyfe et al (1999) cite different studies which show that opposite to the Efficient Market Hypothesis, the volume traded and price of volatility are large, which both show important autocorrelation. According to Jagric et al (2005) Efficient Market Hypothesis is an investment theory which affirms that it is impossible to beat the market since stock market prices always incorporate and reveal all important information. Furthermore, this means that a stock will always trade at their reasonable value, which makes impossible for any investor to either buy at a lower value, or sell at a higher price. The first advantage of technical analysis is that can be modified to any trading medium or time horizon. All assets are perfectly divisible and perfectly liquid meaning that they are marketable at the going price. There are not transaction costs. There are no taxes. All investors are price takers. This means that all investors assume that their own buying and selling activity will not affect stock prices. Even though these statements are neither applicable nor met, yet Capital Asset Pricing Model is the most used model when investing and trying to determine the risk and return of an asset or security. Socialism is a political term applied to an economic system in which property is held in common and not individually, and relationships are governed by a political hierarchy. Common ownership doesnt mean decisions are made collectively, however. Instead, individuals in positions of authority make decisions in the name of the collective group. Regardless of the picture painted of socialism by its proponents, it ultimately removes group decision making in favor of the choices of one all-important individual. Socialism originally involved the replacement of private property with a market exchange, but history has proven this ineffective. Socialism cannot prevent people from competing for what is scarce. Socialism, as we know it today, most commonly refers to market socialism, which involves individual market exchanges organized by collective planning. People often confuse socialism with the concept of communism. While the two ideologies share much in common (in fact, communism encompasses socialism), the primary difference between the two is that socialism applies to economic systems, whereas communism applies to both economic and political systems. Another difference between socialism and communism is that communists directly oppose the concept of capitalism, an economic system in which production is controlled by private interests. Socialists, on the other hand, believe socialism can exist within a capitalist society. Alternative Economic Thoughts Capitalism Capitalism is an economic system involving the private ownership over the means of production, distribution of goods, and the overall structure of businesses. The paper has been developed to evaluate the characteristics of different market structure and prove that eateries such as coffee shops, cafe, restaurants, and patisseries, etc are categorised into a monopolistic competition. Invariably, an analysis has been done to understand whether three or four such firms could compete in an oligopolistic market system. Precisely, the monopolistic competitive market system management has involved a number of elements of perfect competition and monopoly market system (Chu, 2012). Evidently, in a monopolistic competition, firms operating in the industry have offered almost similar products or services but the sold products or services are not perfect substitutes (Brems, 2013). In the meanwhile, the participants in the market possess equal as well as a low degree of market power whereas each of the firms can be identified as price makers. A figure has been presented herein below for better understanding: In a monopolistic competitive market, the price is decided by the firms using the formula MR = MC. However, the profit maximisation is low due to highly elastic demand. Hence, the amount of profitability can be found to be low at eateries such as coffee shops, cafe, restaurants, and patisseries, etc that makes them perfect match for monopolistic competition market. In reality, such market system is the middle position between perfect competition and monopolistic system (Kuenne Chamberlin, 2014). Unlike monopolistic market, a number of operating firms have taken part in the market system many. On the other hand, the obstructions to entry as well exit in the market system is significantly low (Forstater, 2017). Considerably, the decisions taken by any of the business firms participating in the monopolistic competitive market do not affect the other market competitors in a direct way. However, it can be seen through the theories of market economies that the eatery businesses cannot be categorised into monopoly or perfectly competition market. The primary reason for these businesses to not come under the monopoly and perfectly competition market is the decision making abilities of the firm regarding the price charged from the customers and slight substitutional effects of the products and services that makes the demand curve highly elastic (McCorkle, 2011). According to the characteristics of the perfectly competitive market management, the price is decided to be equal to the marginal costs at the equilibrium level due to a perfectly elastic demand curve. In a perfectly competitive market, P = AR = MR = MC = Minimum ATC. Hence, perfectly competitive firms are price takers and possess least decision making powers regarding the pricing strategy. Considering the fact, the eateries businesses cannot charge higher price as the monopolistic firms does (Forstater, 2017). These firms presents the characteristics of both the market, i.e. monopoly and perfectly competition that makes them operate in a monopolistic competitive market. Now, by considering the fact that whether three to four eateries firms such as the restaurants, cafe, patisseries, and coffee shops can operate in an oligopoly market, it is important to note that this type of markets have high barriers to entry. As the firms in oligopoly market are price makers due to no substitution available, the demand curve is inelastic in nature that maximises the profitability as compared to monopolistic competition. Furthermore, the high level of barriers to enter an oligopoly market occurs due to the requirement of high investment and legal proceedings (Pscoa, 2016). For example, the wireless carriers in a nation are found to operate in an oligopoly market. Hence, there is a need of massive capital expenditures to develop the infrastructure. Furthermore, the operators in an oligopolistic market tend to increase brand image by conducting different marketing activities. But, in the case of eateries, the investment and legal proceedings required to start a new business is quite low. There is a high level of competition that is met by product differentiation strategy (Pscoa, 2016). On the other hand, the eateries such as the restaurants, cafe, patisseries, and coffee shops are small scale firms that require low level of capital and financial funding. It is quite difficult for three to four eateries firms to make an oligopoly market. Hence, it is quite clear that three to four such firms cannot comp ete oligopolistically. A comparison of all four market structure has been presented in appendix 1 for further consideration. By considering the above discussion, it can be seen that small scale eateries such as cafs, coffee shops, snack-bars, restaurants and patisseries presents certain characteristics of both monopoly and perfectly competitive firms. On the other hand, these firms do not need high level of investment and legal proceedings that are required to compete oligopolistically. As times went on, the north became increasingly more urban and industrial. They relied on factories and manufacturing to fuel their economy. The north seeked cheap labor from needy immigrants and began to out produce the farming based south. The cities that developed in the North became centers of trade. As mass production began, so did mass population. The north had and extremely strong transportation network as well. Plantations were self sufficient and served as small towns. Also, the south was dependent on steam ships as railroads were far less popular than in the north. The North viewed slavery as wrong however; they were also worried that if outlawed, the freed men would travel upwards and take their jobs. In addition, free time revolved around being in the city. The differences that evolved between the Northern and Southern states affected the nation drastically and eventually led to problems.
